Benno's R adventures

So even though I don't currently have a GTi-R I figured I would document this process from the start. My projections of getting an R in late November / early December are looking good. I've spoken to insurance and they say it is a go. Quoted $250/month with collision though so I might ask around a little. Not super expensive, about $60/month more than my 98 Civic but worth looking into. I am with State Farm. Also thought that it would probably be a good idea to start checking some of them out. Since I have only ever seen one GTi-R in person I still need to lose my R-ginity and take one for a spin. Contacted both Right Drive and Tiger to arrange a visit. I have a test drive booked with Right Drive, not sure if Tiger does those. Either way it should be a perfect way to see a great example (Right Drive) vs a potentially crappy example (Tiger). So things to look out for?? Compression should be around 150-160psi? Excessive timing chain noise. Rattling struts. No hacked wiring or signs of a boost controller = rape-age.......... then the usual driving / braking in a straight line. Normal tire wear = good alignment. A/C works or deleted. So if anyone here wants to sell their car before winter then let me know. I'll be looking to buy in 6-8 weeks.

Alright so I guess I need to update since I finally got to see a couple in person yesterday. Me and my bro drove down to Right Drive in the morning. They were the only test drive I had booked but figured it was a safe bet I would get a good idea of how a proper one should drive. Unfortunately I was I wrong about that one. The main problem being that the clutch was completely pooched so it would max out at about 60km/h and take 20 seconds to get there :-( There were other problems with the car but I will spare you the details, needless to say we were very disappointed. So next we drove over to Tiger to see the supposed "crappy" cars as some point out. We were actually quite impressed. Maybe it was the let down of the Right Drive car but the Tiger cars fired up and seemed to be running great. I wasn't able to get in a test drive, just a roll around the parking lot, but besides a few minor points (mostly interior cosmetics) they seemed good. So in about a month I will go shopping. The plan is do road trip to Quebec to check out a couple and bring one back if I like it. I'm liking the looks of the one at Sunrise JDM but am not going to buy until I find a good one, I am willing to wait. I was very impressed by what I saw though so I did go ahead and order my plates Anyways I am glad I lost my R-ginity even though it wasn't quite what I had expected or hoped. Looking forward to seeing what one of these little guys can actually do.

I think the stock boost gauge is shit.  Definitely disagree on a car being raped if it had an aftermarket one.

I was referring to a boost controller.
I agree the stock boost gauge leaves a lot to be desired (like most cars) but I will take a stocker over having an aftermarket one with a hack job install.

Alright so it looks like I will be going on an R buying mission on Nov 5-8. I have booked 4 days off work and will be going to Sunrise JDM in Montreal with my bros to look at their 2 Pulsars that are lookin' pretty good.
So I thought I would post here what I am looking for just in case I can appeal to some of you OCD Pulsar owners with super clean rides that might be looking to sell for some silly reason.
I am looking for something somewhat low mileage, around 100,000km's
-Original engine running well
-clean interior
-good clutch
-just overall mechanically sound
Bonus points for
-16" summer rims and sport tires with lots of life
-decent stereo
-compatible BOV
-a/m clutch
-a/m springs and struts
-a/m exhaust
-1992 or newer
I am willing to pay up to $9000 for the right car. Not looking for the cheapest car, looking for the best value. I am willing to travel to GTA area any time in the next 2 weeks to check out cars but won't be buying until Nov 6th weekend. If you have a car in PQ near Montreal then I am willing to come check out your car somewhere in the vicinity of HWY 401/20 on Nov 6th.

OK I suppose I should update what has been going on.
I bought an R about a month ago. It has been nothing but good times since then. I've done a few small things like wires, plugs, rotor, cap, replaced the jdm radio, HKS SSQV 3.
The car I bought had 99,000km's on it (Now has 102,000km). I now have my snow tires on it and am looking forward to doing some donuts since it has finally started to snow. My R has a pretty well perfect interior and came with a few extra bits. K&N intake, ARC intercooler, lowering springs, some crazy loud straight back exhaust. It runs and idles amazingly well so I will be taking it down to South Carolina with me for the 9 weeks I spend there in March/April. Ordering some bronze 16" Rota Grids and sticky tires for some fun on the mountain roads. It has a bit of rust on the rear 1/4's that I will be getting fixed hopefully this winter and have my Recaro installed at the same time.
I have the story posted on my site
Part I
http://bennosblogandmore.blogspot.com/2010/10/good-things-come-to-those-who-wait.html
Part II
http://bennosblogandmore.blogspot.com/2010/11/bennos-r-adventures-part-2.html

Big thanks to this awesome site for helping me out with my random panicked moments of worrying about every little thing. I am getting more comfortable working on the car but I am still very much a newb when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks! I love it so much. Not a day goes by that the thought of owning such an awesome car doesn't put a smile on my face.
Just bought some 17" flat black Tenzo Tracer rims with Ecstas. They seem to fit perfect on the car, maybe the previous owner was running 17's at some point.
I am soooo looking forward to driving down to South Carolina on March 1st and being in the mountains for 9 weeks! I'll post pics of the car with the new wheels when I get down there and get her shined up.
Some year we should have a Pulsar week down at the house I rent in SC. I know a tonne of amazing switchback roads we could convoy.

They are 17x7 with around a 42 offset I think. I bought them used with only a few hundred km's on them. They also came with Kumho Ecsta ASt 205/45 tires. They're ok tires and are pretty well brand new like the rims so I'll run them until they die. I'll put on some Star Specs or Advans or whatever is on sale at TireRack when I need new ones lol. Might switch to a 205/40 when I do.

Well done Benno! I absolutely love the gold on black theme you have going one. Thanks for ditching the red pinstripe as that was my trademark ;)

Can't wait to see a full pic of the car.

p.s. hang on to the hood scoop shroud because when it's pouring rain outside, you will get water accumulation in the valve cover near the spark plugs. I take mine off at Autocross events and back on before driving back home.

Oh and I have never used the Dunlops before. The only tire I've used were ecstas over the past 4 years and they are relatively crappy. Looking forward very much to trying the Z1's, only negative thing I have ever heard is that they don't deal well with long heat cycles, ie 20 minute lap sessions on the Mosport big track. But all I have plans for with my Pulsar is a little autoslalom so the Dunlops are perfect for that as they grip well cold.

That Rubber intercooler ducting on the hood really helps !  Two of my past gtirs didnt come with it as people have removed it in the past (Probably so they can see in the hood scoop) But if your doing anykind of long driving/racing you want all the air coming in to go into the intercooler not blow over it :P  heat soak is bad enough with it in

Nice to see another forum member doing his own work :)

I did the grille modification last fall.  I decided to lose the skid plate, just couldn't justify the 20lbs or so right on the nose of the car.  The front bumper was just a quick fix since the previous owner had butchered it for fog lights.  It was just something to get the job done while I get ready for the next phase of the car.  I really do plan on going elbows deep with this build.  While my power goals are very conservative.  Really I am happy with 350BPH.  I plan to do just a disco potato and a manifold.  Also update the fuel mapping and that jazz and get a good tune on it.  The engine should be coming out this fall for a refresh and I can clean up all the old and tired wiring.

Cosmetically and functionally the car is going to be widened.  I am looking to start working with carbon fibre and making my own panels.  I want to run probably 16x9 wheels with 245 tires.  The front bumper will have a splitter and clean up the ducting into the rad and front brakes.  The skirts will work into the fenders and I still need to figure out what I want to do about the rear bumper.

Unfortunately I don't have a timeline for this but certainly the car will always be driveable in the summer months.  I am starting a new job but the Pulsar remains very high on my list of priorities.  I also want to start plugging away on an R32 for time attack and bigger tracks.  All of this just for kicks.  I enjoy working on the cars as much as driving them.  I would be very surprised if my widebody wasn't completed by summer 2014 in some capacity.  I'll give myself an extra year just so I have enough time to give the engine the attention it deserves.

Car idles much better now.  I guess there could be 3 reasons for that.  Either it's the PCV delete (might have been leaking somewhere), or the new plugs maybe?, or the grounding kit.  Grounding kit was like $20 shipped off eBay so I figured it couldn't hurt lol.
