Starter

I aquired a GTIR sr20det and it didnt come with a starter - I see that people say the FWD starter wont work but why not? Will the Tcase get in the way?

Im converting the motor to RWD and mounting it into an s13 so I will have a lot more clearence. Does anyone know if the bolts/ gear positioning will work?

If not does anyone have a GTIR starter.. Im in Victoria BC.

Thanks

good luck converting a 4wd sr20 block into a rwd one, it will simply never bolt on the chassis and there is a good reason : they are slim blocks for allowing a transfer case to bolt behind it. other people have tried before you, abandoned the idea and bought a silvia engine instead. secondly the intake will be facing the firewall, the distributor will also never clear the firewall and there's simply no way to relocate it. the thermostat housing is also on that side and you will have to use a very very long coolant hose that will get burned by the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold.
the s13 transmission will indeed bolt to the engine but it will become a huge nightmare just trying to bolt the engine in.

as for the starter, it works only on the specific flywheel you use and a gtir starter is simply completely different than any other sr20 starter I have seen before.

i think he's a lot further ahead than u think, friends friend

at the point it needs a starter to start

i think if u take a sr20de flywheel and redrill for 11mm bolts, you can use a nx2000/b13 starter, but u might need to fab up mounting points.

no nick, the way I see it he is trying to convert it to rwd but he will have way more work to do than he think. nothing work to make a 4wd or a fwd sr20 block into a rwd one and you will need to fabricate almost everything to make it work, including the block and the head.

they are simply not made to be on a rwd chassis and anyone who worked on both type of engines know why I am saying this

I am not closed minded, those blocks were never made to become rwd. the pointing direction of the intake manifold is one proof, the fact the distributor is on the side of the block instead of the front like the silvia is another one and those are just the beginning. This only mean really too much work when you can buy a silvia engine, for less than a gtir, that will fit directly without giving you headaches and clearance issues, and with tons of aftermarket parts unlike the gtir engine. Silvia engine are popular in s-chassis swap and there's a big reason for that, it's called easy installation.
