My car idle

My car idle

So as i'm sure a few of you know, my car has never fully idled right. Today, i checked the timing, and it was at probably around 25-30*! I adjusted it as far as i could to the one side, and that only brought it to 20*, which is good, but i wondered why it would only adjust to that. So i popped out the timing chain tensioner, it looked fine, operates the way it should. Put it back on and took the valee cover off. (by the way, if you take the tensioner off, make sure to do take the valve cover off so you can set the tensioner correctly, theres a little hook that holds it compressed so its possible to put in, but that hook needs to be released for it to function). First thing i notice when i get the cover off is that the one guide is missing. The one on top that sits inbetween the two cam sprockets. So i'll be getting a new one of those shortly, didnt notice anything else out o the ordinary so i just put the valve cover back on and took it for a quick rip. It seems to have smoothed out the idle some now, and i dont know what i would've donefor that to happen. Maybe whoever was in there before didnt get the tensioner adjusted right?

Anyways, i'll being taking the valve cover off again to put a new guide on, what other sort of things should i be looking for under there?

There you can see where the guide should be. Not sure what the yellow link is, im assuming maybe the chain was replaced at some point.

Yellow mark is one of the 3 marks used to install the chain. The top guide is often removed because it it noisy, but it is a safety equipment to help chain not to skip a tooth

Does the part also help keep more oil on the sprockets too?

Just wondering, in Celm's gallery shot featuring a cutaway graphic on a valve cover, there's a smaller third sprocket illustrated on the valve cover.

would that be for variable valve timing?

the tensioner hook releases itself once the engine is running.

As for idle, did you check 91 gtir grey's checklist for diagnosing idle issues?

Ah ok, i wasnt sure if it did or not, i was in there anyways so i unhooked it myself. Good to know though. And no, but i will have to take a looksie at that. My feeling so far is that one of the cam gears is spun one "spot" to the left or right, because i cant adjust it past 20 degrees.
EDIT: Lol resurrected cuz of spam.
