Anyone ever change their seatbelts to pass inspection?
Just HAD A GREAT DAY! (<-sarcasm). Cop pulled me over today, took my license and registration and made me follow him to the Autopac (Manitoba Public Insurance) inspection building, where an inspector and a dozen trainees/ students were waiting to thoroughly go through my R and flag all the most ridiculous little non-conformance's. It was all the expected things, and one surprise:
- front side-markers (reflectors, piece of cake)
- upper brake light (redundant, easy)
- DRLs (dumb extra expense, but whatever)
- shifter knob, no shift-pattern markings (the dumbest one of all, but I still have the original knob)
- seat belts, not CAD approved!
The only thing I foresee giving me a problem are the seat belts. Has anyone had to change theirs before? Do I need to change the entire belt and latch or just the latch? What did you use as a replacement?
For the record, I've NEVER heard of anyone having to go for an immediate vehicle inspection after being pulled over in Winnipeg. Obviously, this really pissed me off as I was on my way to an appointment and this delayed me by almost 45 minutes. Of course I also felt somewhat violated having 12 people go through my car with free authority. Has anyone else gone through this?
So frustrating.

what a drag!! .. i guess it's getting to be like the spot c-class inspections for big trucks; ... I wonder if this below from recent past cda gazette is relevant to the seat belt part:
Technical Standards Document No. 209, Revision 0 - Seat Belt Assemblies http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafety/safevehicles-mvstm_tsd-tsd-2090rev0_e-777.htm
..maybe keep the successfully passed inspection form you'll receive after handy with the vehicle docs to produce in case & perhaps avoid unrequired repeated 'random' hassling at roadside or otherwise; the inspection form should be valid for some set time. best luck and hope seatbelts from other cdn nissan will do, would be good to know

curious as roadside stops may spread; i dug around a bit more on the inspections thing and this is further what was found:
[Seems like you in _Winnipeg area might be Taking the Brunt of inspections_ now and be in the lead for that treatment across Canada.]
Some manitoba/w. ontario based guys in a regional snow machine forum [c-dot sledding] posted reporting a buddy with jdm vehicle getting stopped similar to yourself and issued compliance notices.

"He said there was a guy who just brought a car from Japan and it was safetied and legally registered however when the inspection was over it was going to cost him about $3000 to get it back on the road." [ymmv]
[and below _here's what makes it especially bad for you guys in Winnipeg_ in particular!]
"That being said I believe there are only 2 guys that do the inspections as their job (in Winnipeg) and they spend most of their time inspecting commercial vehicles so your chances of getting inspected are slim."
[.. wish it were so for you, but Maybe 'slim' chance is changed now with all the new trainies in abundance right there at the test centre!]
New regs are likely all part of a massive 'harmonization' with usa federal statutes that is driving such legislation across canada imho

fwiw:
One practical but as yet unverified criticism i heard about japanese seat belts is said that they clog up and foul more easily with greasy junk food and chips that many NA driven cars are subjected to daily, unlike jdm typically. USA designed buckles were stated to have tighter clearances in mechanism so fast food crap and dirt doesn't fall in! [source: import auto recycler pers com]

Man! Ty, thats rough, that coulda been me! Thats really lame about the belts though, and the shift knob haha. Did they not check you lights to make sure they are DOT approved?
Yeah, I'm not sure if this is a trend that's in the early phases or I was just REALLY unlucky to be driving by when a bunch of trainees needed a car to practice finding non-conformance's on.
Anyway, noone has had to change their seatbelts? Am I the only one? Damnit! Seriously, any advice or past experiences would be great in regards to finding a replacement set of seatbelts.
Thanks.

So I ended buying an entire set of "Autoloc" seat belts for my R from a performance parts store in Ottawa. $450 for all the belts (four 3-point retractable belts and a 2-point non-retractable belt, all in black plus 4 angled mounting brackets) shipped to my door within 2 weeks. They're North-American approved belts. I'll take some pics and post how the install goes, in case anyone runs into the same problem I did in the future.
Man I hope they fit.

have u tried fitting nx2000 belts? or sentra? i bet thats a way cheaper alternative
cheapest option would be self-pick yard, ie karbashers, p-y-p type place here; an import auto recycler would a bit more, nb. always ask price first over availability ;) counter prices vary
from a u-pic each used from $12 up to $16 for retractables

I know for a fact the rear seatbelts are the same in the nx2000, i robbed some belts off my cousins. And one would have to assume the front belts are the same too, everything is the same in those cars...
Did you have the shift pattern on the ashtray like below and they still faulted it?

Lots of vehicles have stickers on the back of the sunvisor only.

That thing is sweet! Mine just has it on the shift knob. I wish it was on that ashtray though, i love the reverse symbol. it looks aftermarket though.
oh, i wondered if it was stock; unfortunately pic's out of focus, looks better actually, but regardless i hope that similar may suffice. A key fob might be found with the gear-change pattern logo and be cannibalized & stuck onto the stick itself if req.

i'm sure your're right on the aftermarket, here's how some wrx guys did theirs: http://www.wrxtuners.com/forums/f93/how-make-shift-pattern-decal-22470/
Here's a cleaner jpg. enjoy!

THANKS, RYAN, YOU'RE THE BEST. GUESS YOU DIDN'T READ MY FIRST COUPLA POSTS TOO CLOSELY? YOU KNOW, THE PARTS WHERE I ASKED "IF ANYONE HAS TRIED ANY OTHER SEAT BELTS IN THEIR CARS"?!?! THIS INFORMATION WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT YESTURDAY. THANKS AGAIN.
Anyway, the price was not an issue, especially for my wife when I mentioned the cost of new belts versus pulling some old ones off a car in a yard or buying them at a recycling shop. She was much more concerned about which ones stand a better chance of protecting me and my occupants in a collision. I also didn't want to bring home some used ones and install them just to find out a month later they don't feel like retracting very well anymore (pet peeve).
Plus, the new seat belts will be all shiny and clean. :-D

department of better later then never seatbelt department ;) for those who choose picking any old seat belts from a yard and not familiar those places have a wide selection, heads up & fwiw: check well bros: if the inertia reel doesn't catch sharply; the webbed stitching has separated anywhere; or if there's any oil stains on the belts or webbing; any cuts or perforations anywhere; marker pens; fraying; cigarette burns; loose stitching; dodgy spring/latch mechanism; cracked plastic components, or most importantly unreadable or non compliant certification tag; then reject the pc out of hand to the bin. Usually rears will be virtually unused. Once removed from vehicle for further inspection unreel them all the wayout, shake out any loose debris, check the tilt and pull lock mechanism, feed back in slow and tight, then pullout sharp again, pull out finally again to check belt retraction. Might get years out of good ones.
If cleaning, knot loosely or clamp wide open fully extended, soak and wash with hot soapy water only, rinse with tap or hose, and hang to dry. Do not use excessive heat and cook belts. Do not clean with solvents, high pressure spray washers, or dry steam and choose something similar in size. Always use the same factory bolt locations and don't mess with the tag. [Dale Earnhardt RIP]
Shoulda admitted i swapped belts back into my 75 corolla & worked as a shipper once at recycle depot.:( Good luck to all concerned, sux that spotting jdm will be 'picking the easy cherries' for inspections but they also line up other heaty cars for mod restrictions: http://www.police.york.on.ca/erase/interior.htm ... funny no gearshift knob pattern issue indicated there, must be new.

I'm pretty sure thats actually illegal too. Cops can't just pull someone over for no reason, there has to be a legit reason for their suspicion. Unless of course it was a roadside check for alcohol etc..
They do get on their campaigns, ie. driven by youth's reported "profound need for speed" resulting in street racing action and opening a pandoras box at curbside; vehicle alterations and street racing gives them an entry to a whole avenue of cop related stuff based on profiles and the like; seems they think the compliance enforcement stuff might save them picking up parts etc in course of their work day. Wotever, for a peek into the prophylactic mindset see

The concern might be stated as saving the youth from themselves but you can be sure alot of revenue generation acrues to govts.
