Turbo stuff

found out my turbo was gone with shaft play and blow by so was wondering if this was a good deal

all i want is a ballbearing turbo that wont shit the bed like my last turbo did...and has anyone tried this guy before???
Suggestions welcome...i dont want to have to buy a shit load of other supporting mods right now as i found this out while replacing the clutch and repainting the car.

Cheers

it's an ebay turbo. it will shit the bed.

buy a gt2860r or 2860rs or 2871r which are ball bearing turbos. But get a legit garrett one. or get your turbo rebuilt by a reputable turbo rebuilder.

What lynx said. There is a thread on here regarding turbos. I was a day away from buying a new GT2860RS (they are identical, the GT2860R and GT2860RS, the only difference being the gt2860R compressor inlet and outlet has a flange with bolt holes (suits the gtir) and the gt2860RS does not have bolt holes - so you'll need to run silicone couplers to join your pipework. the gt2871 has similar characteristics and flanging options as well.

I'd get the .86 a/r version as the .64 version is too small for the gtir.

As for supporting mods, you'll want a NEW FUEL PUMP for sure. I'm sure others will chime in with what else you'll want, etc etc. Probably a dependable boost controller also.

the .63a/r will spool faster but loose top end vs. the .86 its not the wrong turbo for the engine it just depends what your doing with it... i know guys with the .63 and all love the faster response and still make power. its all in what you want your turbo to do.... more top end power go with .86 more response .63

gt2871r whit the bolt flange, doesnt fit dirrectly into the car. turbo is bigger and need some mod to the engine block so it fits,
the charge pipe bolts flange is not clocked at the good place
a custom bracket need to be built so the wastegate actuator is aligne

modifying your engine block to fit a turbo (more than likely by removing material from said block) is the improper way to do things. but hey its your car right. but this is coming from me and i wouldn't try to use any of the stock mounting parts anyways.... If you feel the need to get a bigger turbo... no idea why as a gt2861 is capable of flowing enough air to make 400hp this is my recommendation. your taking it off so why not do it properly... 1. new manifold (if space below is an issue get top mount) 2. External waste gate... (i have seen no less than 4 sr20's die because waste gate stuck shut and boost spiked) weld the one on the turbo shut or if you wanna be baller get one without it. 3. build all the proper piping to connect it. enjoy your slightly more expensive way more properly done turbo repair

Hey ohhai, keep the ragging on other members to a minimum please, s3by is from quebec so you shouldn't expect him to have perfect english. thanks for bringing your comments that actually have to do with the thread at hand but please be respectful of fellow members.

it wasn't meant in a bad way it is just more difficult to understand in that form. no disrespect i understand not everyone writes perfect English I'm sorry i was a bit harsh. Any tech info on turbos themselves I'm sure i can help out with. Also to say if its just the seals that are blown rebuild it yourself mark how the compressor wheel lines up with turbine shaft before taking it apart (so its in balance when re assembled) from there there isn't much to it. Common thing to go first is the piston rings on the turbine shaft as these are the only rotating seals (there's two piston rings turbine side and one on the thrust spacer on compressor side) while your at it since a kit would come with them you can throw in new bearings too. and appearance aside it is good as new for way cheaper. any more info or a detailed instructions on tear down and rebuilding a t28 lemme know.
