Stripped bolt

Stripped bolt

So I was changing my trans and diff fluids today and ended up stripping the center diff fill plug. I did the trans and rear though. Just wondering how you can remove it now cause I tried to use a cheater bar on it and it slipped then ended up stripping it a bit since there wasnt a whole lot of room to get at that plug. Then after I stripped that bolt I was just checking the drain plug and found out that it was really loose.. like I could unscrew it with my hand. So that just made me feel worse about it now. So the center diffs probably done but anyways whats the best way to remove the fill plug and where can I buy one from. Would they have them at any autoparts stores or are there different sizes. Thanks

well make sure non of the shaving from the stipped drain plug fall into the tranny
there are rethreading tools out there if the problem is on the oil tank
the drain plug it self just get the same size and check the thread spacing and u shld be fine

for part number check pic of plugs at : http://www.canadagtir.com/forums/canada-gtir/general-chatter/new-owner-vancouver

maybe check via site below to try and confirm #s:

I think you mean transfer case = center diff.

Hopefully your transfer case is still ok but check any drained fluid for shiny tiny bits of metal or burnt oil smell when draining what fluid may remain. If there's no jewelery or chunks maybe it's not totally toasted.

Were you using a square headed socket drive in the female filler plug and it stripped?
No idea if penetrating fluid, shimming the square drive tight somehow, using torch heat, or a chisel cut to the plug would be eventually give what takes to remove the part. Sometimes an initial short sharp shock of a hammer to the end wrench held on the part tends to loosen frozen bolts by breaking a crystalization that can occur. Caution etc. Best of luck, not sure what other vehicles use the same plugs, but a transmission shop might be able to supply the part if not from nissan..

Ya I was using a 3/8 drive ratchet in the filler plug. I used a lot of wd40 on it and also tried heating it up but I dont think my torch was hot enough for the job though. Thanks for the help though I'll get back to it and try it some more.

isn't it a 1/2 inch drive?  its been a long while since i changed my fluid.  that might be the problem

hmm or maybe it was a 3/8's sorry can't remember

How bad is it? you could get a 1/2 to 3/8 reduction and epoxy it in the drain plug using a good metal epoxy like JB weld or somthing. hold it in place by using a rachet strap around the diff,,, then get the case heated (DRAIN CAP OFF LOL WATCH FOR SMOKE)and use a good size 1/2 breaker to get it broke free.

I brought it into a few tranny shops first one that tried it messed it up more then it already was and told me they couldnt do it. So I brought it into another shop and they just welded a nut to it and twisted it off and charged me $90 for it AHHH

refering to the link above with the pic most of the female plugs are 3/8"
"D" 00931-2081A "G" 01642-00111 "K" 32104-06R01 .
but ..
"A" 00931-2121 the diff filler plug is 1/2" and
"C" 00931-2061A is 1/4 drive.
"E" 32103-03E01 is 12 mm bolt.
Couldn't seem to id bolts with nissan4U index but that's what available.

Should be a standard NPT fitting... I bet you can pick one up at a plumbing store

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but does anyone know what the hell this plug on the transmission is for? It's not 3/8 and its def not 1/4 more like 5/16 or something. it looks to be right over the centre diff....inspection hole or something? but what would you inspect...that the final drive gear is stripped?

Perhaps it was a pressure feed for the hydraulic centre diff?
