SR20DE Water Pump in a GTIR
What are the actual differences? I've heard they will bolt up, is this true? Are there belt issues? Is the rotor a different design?
My water pump seized, and i'm wondering what the $60 difference is. I also have 3 DE pumps laying around.
Thanks for the help.
**************EDIT************ see post 7

the design is the same and are completely compatible . only difference is that the the four way "t" looking thing that attaches to the belt drive is a different size. could be different with diferent sr's though . but with the bluebird sr20det it's like that.
Thanks Herbert. Do you need to run the DE pulley then I'm assuming?
Not that I don't trust you but can anyone else back that up? I'd like to be absolutely sure.
I've gone through 3 water pumps (first one started to leak and second only lasted a year since I had the motor out and didn't like the "sound" coming from it so I replaced it with a new one) and from what I remember the North American SR's water pumps don't bolt up to the front cover of the GTI-R specifically... in other words the mounting bolts are placed slightly differently. From what I remember there's nothing special about the design of the pump except for the mounting ability to the front cover of the GTI-R. Alot of SR owners when looking to upgrade their motors will change the front covers with the oil and water pumps for the better GTI-R oil pump which is by far the best out of all the SR's out there. The oil pump gear on the GTI-R is the thickest one which allows for the best volume and pressure to be created for the SR motors unless you switch over to a dry sump system. I've tried to get mine rebuilt but it just wasn't worth the trouble than ordering one from Nissan. (If you could get a rebuild company to do it then it'll be the same as a North American SR rebuild for the water pump, it's just the housing you have to keep)
So unless you plan on changing your front timing cover (which is totally possible from any SR motor) with oil pump and water pump, you won't be able to use another water pump other then one ordered from Nissan Japan. Just remember that changing your timing cover will downgrade your oil pump. (Side note also is that the timing covers although interchangeable do not bolt up correctly to the heads when switching from FWD and RWD applications so you have to use silicone to keep the cover from leaking in that area)
As for which timing cover/oil pumps are the better the oil pumps range from worst to best like this.
1 - SR20DE in North America
2 - SR20DET's both FWD AND RWD (Except for GTI-R)
3 - SR20VE
4 - SR20DET in GTI-R
(As for the SR20VET.... I wouldn't know since I've never known anyone to take one apart and measure the thickness of the oil pump gear) I guess you could always try to compare part numbers for the SR20VET motor but I've never been that interested in it... but if someone else out there cares to find out please let me know.
Oh by the way that's why the GTI-R water pump doesn't cross reference over to any other part numbers cause there's only one application.
As for water pumps crossing over from other SR applications I guess they might but I've never looked into it (like Bluebird SR's and North american SR's). Since you have 3 other DE pumps why not just pull one and see if it'll match up... I tried from the DE, RWD DET, and VE motors without any luck.
Good Luck and hope this helps save you time and money.
What khrys said
Drive it like you stole it
Mine was done and I got the pump from a guy on ebay, he was located in california and had a bunch of GTIR water pumps.
Thanks Khrys, thats what I was looking for. You seem to know a heck of alot about sr's. I'm going to pull the pump off the gtir to see if i can get it rebuilt. If not, i'll try to see if i can 'make' a DE pump work. I have a feeling i might just ahve to shell out for a waterpump. If anyone is interested in saving on shipping to get a spare, and lives near London ontario pm me.
So, I took the water pump off. And was VERY surprised to see how different it is. You would be lucky to get 2 bolts to line up properly. The GTIR pump is SOOO solid, having a thicker flange, more volume in the pump, and more blades on the non-cast impeller.
See for yourself why you pay $100 rather than $50.
http://www.frsport.com/OEM-Nissan-RNN14-SR20DET-AWD-Water-Pump-GTi-R--GTiR-_p_2302.html 70$ :) have a nice day
Thanks nick. $69.99 US plus $18 shipping arrives in 5 bus days or more, plus taxes brokerage and duties. 100 Canadian at least, like I said.
FRsport is the best place to get them to Canada that I have found however.
I'll let you know how the rebuild goes.
i forget, in vancouver i get stuff without brokerage or shipping costs kuz i just drive to the border which is 40 mins away. so it would be 70$ shipping is free within the usa from frsport at the moment
plus most of the time if ur shit is under 100$ the customs guy doesnt even bother
ztune has it for 86$
My OE GTI-R pump at Nissan was 74.11$CAD on feb 1st 2008.
