Small upgrade to GT2860RS/disco potato - MODS?
My turbo shit the bed last month. I've come across a GT2860RS for about $1150.
Anyways, as for mods/upgrades, the car is bone stock aside from a walbro fuel pump, fmic, ssqv and pod filter.
I am wondering about these few questions:
1. will the stock oil and water lines fit with the new turbo? Or am I better off getting a set of braided hoses made up? Or is there a kit somewhere? If anybody knows of a ready-made kit, can they post a link or at least some terms that I can google?
2. If there is not a ready made kit and I would be better off getting the lines made up locally by a hose shop or performance shop, what should I bring to them? I'm thinking I'll need the length of hose (obviously) as well as the banjo fittings and any other fittings (the tapered, barbed fitting for the water line near the stock boost solenoid).
3. Finally, will the stock ecu, afm and injectors be able to cope with the new turbo? I plan to stay at "stock" boost, regulated by the stock boost solenoid. After I finish school in April, I will look into different ecu or piggyback options, but right now the ONLY goal is to get the car running again safely.
I know there is another recent thread regarding the GT2860RS and supporting mods for it, however the owner of that car has forged internals that can handle a more aggressive power goal than I am looking at for the time being.
Thanks!

basically at stock boost your stock Fuel system is fine... most people have been running 1 bar with a solid stock fuel pump. youll spool a little faster,,, maybe the fuel tables at the lower RPM might be a little lean but your MAF and and 02 sensor should pic up on the extra air and add fuel,, etc,, there are like a tone of universal oil and water line kits on ebay etc,,, you can replace the banjo fittings with the AN or NTP adaptors if needed as well
Mine isn't bigger than yours.. I just like to drive
are the water and oil lines good quality? and also, can you explain the benefit/use of using AN or NTP adapters instead of regular banjo fittings?
Do you have any links to oil/water line kits?
Thanks.

that turbo will bolt on to a bone stock car run will run perfect. im running the potateo right now and its awesome. spools almost 300-500 rmp lower than stock. all the oil and water lines will bolt righr up
ebay has line kits if ypu really want to. but the stock lines will work jist fine
i have the same tubby on mine ur oil/ water hoses will be fine and work no probs and the std ECU / afm / injectors will be fine aswell put in a boost and fuel controllor and u can bring up ur boost to 1.2 bar with no problem hope that helps a little

absolute maximum would be 1.2 on a stock engine. at that point your on the verge of poppin the headgasket. but it all deponds on how brave u are and if u feel like rebuilding lol
stock engine will take more than 1.2 bar mine went for over 2 yrs running 1.3bar id say its how good the map is on the car im running 1.5 bar now for the last 4 yrs but my engine is forged lol
the green dragon
well must be nice having a built engine. my top end popped on 1 bar. twice lol. and i have proper supporting mods as well. but im not telling u what to do. im jut throwing my fair warning out there lol. like i said. if your brave enough and have a nice bank account to fix it when she pops. feel free lol. just my two cents from experience
well if the stock lines fit use them!!!
as far as the adaptors go there simple... the banjo bolt taps into the block and fluid travles through the center threded part,, out the top shank into the "banjo" and out the "banjo neck" an adaptor gets rid of the bolt and makes it so a a hose/hard line with AN / NPT fitting will connect to the same hole..

I plan on upgrading to a disco potato also ? do you have the garrett part number that will fit the gtir bolt on ?
I have GT2860RS - 739548-5 from garrett's website. Does anybody know what part number the turbo is on their gt2860rs installed on their car?
RNN14
i dont think the -5 will fit bolt on ... btw are you going for the .64 or .86 ^
Ok, what evidence do you have that it won't? I am hoping to get .86 a/r

if the turbo is 1150$ and only a slight upgrade, why not look for a good condition used gtir one for half the cost?
1993 GTIR, front skid plate, HKS turbo timer, Enkei Two piece 15X6.5" rims. All else is stock

why run in to the same problem say 3-6 months down the road. if it breaks fix it. properly. the first time. and if you know a gtir like my self. you would know they will treat your bank account like shit if you dont meticuliously maintain them.
Haha so true. Its not a cheap replacement but a brand new modern ball bearing turbo sans worries is nice to have.
its not that small of an upgrade ... that turbo really has a lot of potential on a gtir for a nice and reliable build.
The thought process behind this turbo is that it is a larger turbo than stock (flows more) but is still modest enough that the stock engine can handle it. I don't need to put a bigger turbo on just to have the engine pop a month or two later. Once I have a stronger looking bank account, I'll start slowly modding it to take advantage of what the turbo can push. Once that becomes the limit, I'll sell the turbo and move on to a larger one or a different car.
Still looking for part numbers, and waiting on your pm benmack. Thanks!

im currently running 350hp at 1 bar with this turbo. this turbo is one of the best for the gtir. it has the low spool up of a stock t28 but the boost of the gt28.

still at work lol. ill go through all my stuff when i get home. only thing tjat is not bolt on on my turbo is the hot pipe( triangle flange with the 3 holes ) as i opted to not use that as i have my own custome pipeing. but ill see what i can find you.

their is no way u are getting 350bhp @ 1bar with A GT28RS IM GETTING 341 BHP @ 1.5 BAR WITH THE SAME TURBO AND I HAVE ALOT OF MODS ON THE CAR BUT I DO GET 355 FT LB TQ AND MY BOOST COMES IN AT 2500 RPM THATS A FAST SPOOL UP

im not here to arguee on this guys thread. if you want that start a new one.
im afraid this http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT28/GT2860R_739548_9.htm will fit bolt on ... unless you have custom piping like benmack... its basicly at disco potato with a proper compressor housing (triangle with 3 holes)
you are correct sir. that will bolt on. clocking of the turbo will need to be done. only thing about the turbo in the link you provided is it is not a disco potatoe. well it is basically. the one you have in you link is a ( GT2860R ) the actual disco potatoe turbo is a ( gt2860rs).
according to the specs ... it has the very same potential ? anyway I also thought it wasnt exactly a disco potato but if you look at the description provided in the link above, it mentions that its a disco potato with a different compressor housing ...
bloody hell is it confusing to order this thing.
If the part number 739548-5 has a round inlet that a silicone joiner attaches to, then it's not the one I'm after. I am looking for the gt2860rs that is as close to the stock flange setups as stock.
I need:
2 bolt inlet on compressor housing.
3 bolt compressor outlet
t25 4 bolt flange from exhaust manifold
t25 5 bolt flange to exhaust housing.
In essence, needs to LOOK like the turbo in the link that goshko posted, but be a GT2860RS (not GT2869R like in his link [although it is the same internals, just with a 2560 compressor housing on it]) with a .86 A/R, not .64.
EDIT: after looking at www.frsport.com, the only difference they list between the two different 2871's on their site is that the RS has the round inlet, whereas the R has the 2 bolt inlet, same as the gtir. I'll try and get in touch with garrett tomorrow.
Talking to anybody local, they don't have a sniff aside from "well we can't find those part numbers." I've tried showing them pictures, and am about to contact garrett's support - since all of the performance distributors in the area can't seem to answer the question.
RNN14
ok well let us know what garrett has to say because ive been looking around for a long time also !
yes that is right. the internals are the same. it is just the compressor that is diffefent. as one has the 2 inch round for a silicone coupler. the other has the flages for the stock hot pip and intake pipe. the exhaust housig on both the r and the rs are bolt on for gtir
you can get the .64 option no problem just ask for it

Found this: and am contacting ATP turbo to confirm it for myself.

I am looking for the .86 a/r option. .64 would be counterproductive from the stock gtir turbo.
My email to garrett's web support:
I am looking for an upgrade from my current turbo, a stock TB2804 turbo, one that comes on the Nissan GTiR with the sr20det motor.
I am looking at a GT2860RS (disco potato). I am looking for a turbo that has those internals, but comes setup with the 3 bolt compressor outlet and 2 bolt compressor inlet. Also the T25 exhaust housing inlet and 5 bolt outlet.
Can you tell me the part number or give me some pictures so I know what I am about to buy?
Thanks for your help.
Their reply:
Hello Jesse,
Yes, you're looking for PN 739548-9:

Regards, Garrett Gearhead
RNN14
why would you say it would be counterproductive ? .64 will spool way quicker than a .86. I dont know if you plan on pushing this turbo to the max but if you dont have the supporting mods .86 would be a waste.
well the spool on the .86 is almost as fast as the stock T28 with more head room... the .64 would be more eficiant than the stock T28... aka produce less heat etc...(in the stock boost rnage) but with no head room for future power goals...
Mine isn't bigger than yours.. I just like to drive
so canada did you buy http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT28/GT2860R_739548_9.htm ???
I will end up ordering that turbo yes. I am just waiting on pricing from my local suppliers.

so did you ever buy it ?
No I didn't. when I brought the car to the shop to begin getting the work done, they said that the turbo was fine, and that no seal was blown, nor had and wheel or housing damage occurred.
They said that they had gotten alot of turbo'd cars and trucks into the shop with the same problem over the last 2 winters. Nobody could explain it aside from the possibility of large temperature swings (-30 to +10C and back again in two to three days) doing something bad with the crankcase breather system.
car is working fine now aside from regular maintenance that I'm working on.
RNN14
Well, at least we know which part number to order for a disco potato specific for our GTI-R's! Cheers.
All go, no show
