problem with transmission please read and give your imput

ok so we all know from the gear selector position where it is in 5th gear, you can not simply slide the sifter down to "R"
there is something in the box that prevents this because it would just grind gears.

the problem that I am experiencing is that from any position the gear shift is in, it is as if I am trying to go from "5th" down to "R". I therefore can not put my car into "R" from any gear selector position.

Have you tried slightly releasing the clutch while you try to slide the shifter into R?

Yeah, the problem is more simple then that. It is as though there is no reverse. Next time you get in your car, before you start it put it in 5th and try to shift to reverse. Now picture that always happening.

problem will probably be with the mechanism that stops you from shifting to reverse by accident.  I'm about to rip a trans apart with a stuck in reverse problem.  I'll post up some pics of the mechanism.

There are all kinds of shafts with detent balls in this transmission that wreak havoc when they fail or get jammed. When I lost first and second gear, the gate for that gear had fallen so that the selector couldnt even go into the gate, let alone try to select a gear. guess what is responsible for the gates staying in position? lol yup detent balls with springs.

is there anyway to strengthen the to prevent the problems?

the trans***

not in terms of the detent stuff...put in some high quality stiffer springs maybe?  That is just age and wear talking rather than a strength problem.

ahh, okay. is there a common way to beef up these trannys without dropping a fortune? ive been hearing they are quite glassy

they hold plenty of power if you can shift, and go easy on the launches.

Once you start making over 350ish ft/lb you will run into problems with the trans strength.

hey i just had my trans apart recently for this same problem and it ended up being that a part got wedged in the assembly that controls 5th to reverse and damaged the spring that flicks the wheel that stops the 5tr action ! the trans is really simple to work on once you have it out and on a table ! ive had mine apart a handful of times for various reasons ( look up the gtir workshop manual on Google for a breakdown...) ! anyhow i actually had a junk spare trans that had stripped gears and robbed the parts i needed out of it and it saved the trans ! hope this helps you out !
