Need Help: trouble getting into first gear
Need advice/guidance. Getting into first gear is almost impossible when the car is in motion. I'm a big fan of downshifting so this is really annoying.
If the car is started, not moving, push clutch in, first gear is a little tough to go in. Slipping into second or third then first helps.
If the car is rolling even very slowly, it is very difficult, if I force it then it will grind.
If the car is really moving...i don't even try anymore but it's a tough habit to break.
All other gears seem ok but I don't have another car to reference.
If anyone can volunteer to take it for a spin I'd really appreciate it. 'Atomic' did drive it for a bit but he was pressed for time so he didn't have a chance to really notice anything. btw: I'm heading up to Beaverton this weekend. Taking 407 right to Brooklin then up the #7.

Don't downshift to first. You don't need to and the trans isn't designed for that.
Mine wont go in over 20km... i dont do it anymore!
I don't engine brake in 1st but if I EVER drop into a low speed:rpm in 2nd I WANT to shift down into 1st. This is especially important at 'rolling stop' signs or in city traffic. I really hate chugging in 2nd.

then come to a complete stop..?
you are not getting full disengagement of the clutch
things to look at:
--master and/or slave cylinder
--clutch soft line
--add a pedal-box reinforcement bracket
--and last but not least the clutch itself
-Mike

Brand new master and slave (one month), bracket is fine. Soft line "looks" ok and doesn't bulge anywhere (it's on my list of things to replace). I was thinking that if the clutch were going (it will...I know) then all gears would be affected equally.
Is there a post for clutch pedal adjustment? Volunteers needed!!

I "could", I suppose. But I'd rather not. It wastes fuel, brakes, time, but mostly my patience.
I would much rather be able to slip into 1st while rolling 5-10 kph.

Your habit, yes it is a habit and a BAD one at that, bends or breaks selector forks, which is what I suggest you have done, BENT the selector fork.
Only way to fix is remove the gearbox and repair.

Beware the lollipop of mediocrity, lick it once and you'll suck forever.
If you rev match properly it will slip right in even at 20 km/h. Papa smurf raises an obvious point you may have bent a selector fork. Any time you grind a gear while putting pressure on the selector it creates many shock loads that can bend or break one of the forks. Also this is a weak area of our trans so you are not doing it any favors.
Thanks for everyone's input so far. On the bright side, I was planning to do the clutch relatively soon. On the darker side, I wasn't planning on doing the trans for a few years...

Yeah, that used to bother me too but I got over it. If all these Rs have the same issue I'm thinking it's not designed for that (like someone already said).
I was under the impression that no matter what vehicle, old, new, whatever the case:
NEVER downshift to first.
most older vehicles won't even do it.
