Engine compression ...

Hi guys , so I did a compression test on the 1st cylinder ... sadly I had 120 psi I did not check the 3 others because I was really disapointed ... what are my options ? Engine rebuild ? 120 is pretty damn bad if you ask me ...

Man. 120 is not the end of the world. They should be around 140 if I'm correct. But I would definatly tes tthe other 3 cylinders to determin what's going on in your motor. These cars are a pain in the ass if u don't maintain them. Don't give up so easy dude.

i recently did one about 2 months back
150, 150, 155, 150

are you doing the comp test with the throttle held open...if not ur numbers will be low because of the indiviual butterflys.

lucky guy nick ... im really disapointed right now :(

goshko... Is your engine having any problems or does it run ok? You should test the other cylinders, if they all show similar compression you're not doing bad. If they are all significantly different from each other then that's a different story.

hmm I am very satisfied with the performance of my engine ... And a mechanic did the compression test ... if I remember correctly he didnt give throttle at all ... he just cranked the engine ! could that be the reason ?

Very possible... If all the cylinders show approximately the same compression and your engine runs good then don't worry about it.

Its not luck for Nick. If he sells someone should jump at it, no matter what the price. He definitely maintains his car the best here.

when u do the comp test, pull the plugs, pull the fuse on the fuel pump, and throttle pedal to floor, 5 cranks is really all u need.

all what the guy did when he did the test was pull 1 plug out, put the gauge in there and I think cranked the engine twice, he did not take the fuel pump fuse out and he wasnt giving throttle at all ... I am planning on buying myself a gauge and trying it myself ... so I take off the fuel pump fuse ? unplug all my plugs with sparks out also ? press throttle completly down and crank the engine ? How many times on each cylinder should I crank ? Twice ?

nubie question... "throttle wide open" does that mean I need to push down completly the accelerator pedal ?

^ yup, so the butterflies are completely open while cranking the engine.

Follow what nick wrote here and you'll get accurate results:

fwiw: W.O.T often mis-named the in vernacular as "Full Throttle" which technically is the closed position.
nb. battery should be fully charged for test

u sure about that WOT is wide open throttle meaning throttle plate is wide open, not closed.

I agree

I just did a compression test a few hours ago. I got 150 152 152 148

Ok I did the compression test correctly . . . I have 150 120 150 145, now for the 120 I put oil in the cylinder and it went back up to 145, what is the problem ? piston ring ?

a leak down test could be the next step; what did that plug look like?

are you talking about the spark plug ? It looked good ...

Posted: Tue, 03/30/2010 - 8:02pm

if oil brings the compression back up, then yeah chances are the rings or ringlands are shot.

Perform a leakdown test.
