changed fuel pump... problems 1 hour after...

I changed my fuel pump with my warranty return from my original faulty unit walbro 255. I did the job with another nissan guy who is quite knoledgeable and we did everything thorough. It started first shot and there was no fuel leaks. We went for a solid test drive and then I dropped him off and head home. On the way home the car pulled very good and I even skooled a porsche in 4th gear power display... lol... anyway, later as I was arriving home I made a detour to go buy some beer, you know, tap myself on the back for having a solid running "R" and get shit face... but destiny decided otherwise... maybe it was the soul in my "R" some say, we will never know... but it completly died on me inside of 5 seconds. just parked her as she was not running but still going.

I checked, top connecting 3 lines - ok good
fuel filter hoses - ok good
checked for vaccum hose disconnected - ok good
checked the top gas tank connector for fuel pump - ok good
checked the fuse for the fuel pump - ok good
checked relay was plugged in properly - ok

notavw told me to look at the power line for the pump as his failed after installing a walbro 255. I will look at those tomorrow morning. It must draw more power so it cause failure on weak links.

Special thanks goes to my friend Adam Tang who owns a 4 runner and some hiking rope... he towed my car home downtown vancouver using every alley possible and we made it!!! :D TANG TOWING FTW (asian accent) :P

I'll keep you posted.

i would hard wire in the pump and put it on its own circuit directly from the battery..that way you know the wiring will be good.

totally agreed.. the stock wiring isn't designed for the continuous duty current of that 255...run a solid power and ground(FUSED LOL) to the pump

use a relay to interrupt the power to the pump

use ignition acc/on power to fire the relay...

I went and bought all the proper stuff to plug the pump to the battery based on information found on GTIROC.

8gauge amp wire
20 amp fuse 10 inch from battery
Bosch 12 volt fuel pump relay
Soldering tool and solder / heatshrink.

I mock it up on the car first and took note of where to cut and plug, then came up to my pad and created this beautifull new wiring harness. Woohoo... its an acheivment for me as I know nothing at all about electicity and I am learning a bunch doing this.

I am about to go find the power with a voltmeter on the pump connector to solder that to my harness and then I'll be good to test it.

ok, after almost a week to basicaly doubt everything, remove all link of fuel lines, air pressure them, flush them, fuel filter flush... swap my old fuel pump back... all along, I was dealing with 2 barely running fuel pump... I tested them both tonight on a 14 battery fully charged and they basicly push as much as an aquarium pump... I am thinking about getting a kenne bell boost a pump next week and run that inline.

I am wondering what to use as main fuel pump as I need to buy a new unit but its been 2 bad experience with walbro so far.

Congrats, frenchy! Glad to hear it has all worked out. So, based on the experience you had with the Walbro fuel pumps, would you not recommend one? I keep reading all these R owners saying "buy a Walbro fuel pump". Now I scared. :(

naw man, the walbro is all good and add power and response. It was all my fault, I somehow had a ground and power mix matched when I plugged it all. I also had a problem with losing the fuel pump filter sock due to the crappy circlip, I suggest adding a ziptie to the sock for peace of mind. The old 15 yrs old gas tank do have some crap in them that fuel pump dont like.

but all working now, its damn nice!

I actually have an extra brand new walbro kit here at home I had picked up when I thought I had broken the other one.

I can sell it if anyone need it, its the kit for a Eclipse because its much better fitting than the kit for the nissan cars, it comes with extra rubber sleeve to shim the pump in the carryer, same pump unit, GSS341 255lph HP.

let me know if not I'll return it next week at Mopac.

I paid 150$ plus tax, I'll let it go for 150 shipped. ( I can return it for store credits if not)

its brand spanking new, bag still not broke open.

I'd return it if I were you. They can be had from eBay (genuine) for $100 shipped. (or at least that's what I paid for mine a year ago).

yeah I figured but I needed a backup before I did more mecanic work cuz I didnt knew if mine was good or not, so I good more parts to be safe.

I'd still recommend the kit for the eclipse though if anyone is gonna buy a new kit.

I'll return mine and will get new silicone hoses and proper turbo clamps. I'll also get a new boost gauge and maybe a battery relocation kit.

i like to throw money at my car, it makes it sooooo happy.
