Ground up Re-build UPDATED 11/10/26

So Ive been posting here a while and dont realy think ive posted many pics of my car etc... maybe some rally cross shots I dunno. The reason I havent posted many pictures is b/c my car looked horid LOL dents and some rust holes.. etc. So im doing a ground up rebuild starting with the body and moving to the sub frames etc... normally I dont care about looks but Ive decided driving around in a fast rusty VW golf isn't for me. So here are some pics of my progress fender small LOL so check out these AWESOME speakers!! Luckally I replaced the radio with this "CD Playa" by APEXi

Awesome can't wait to see the end result. Disassembly would be a great way to find hidden problems and get to know the car better.

I'm getting my 1/4 panel cancer fixed when I get back from the South and then storing her during the winters from now on. As fun as it is in the snow I just cant stand being out in the salt.

agreed but be carfull with your storage, I stored my car in one of those temporary shelters and it actully made things worse by holding in the moisture,,, I had insulated it with straw bails etc,,,, it was like a rust multiplyer,,, hench the rebuild,,, the care would have been better to sit outside,,, lol ironic

Yeah I'll just get self storage or something since half my winter is spent down South anyway I only need to park it for 3 months.

Cold storage is the best place for a car anyways isn't it? My brother stored his in a heated barn and the mice attacked it lol. Plus if the car isnt perfectly clean warmth makes rust work faster if there is any salt on it.

I was wondering on when someone would finally do a rebuild of an R on here.  I think this is the first one.  Want to do the same to my car but got to get some other things done first like school.  Will be following closely so I know what to expect when I eventually rebuild.

Posted: Tue, 03/15/2011 - 7:02am

Do finish school first!!

Today Im going to take out the rear sub frame... and just see what Im really in for LOL... pwder coating works out to be about the same price as POR 15 with less work for me. so Im going to go that rout I think LOL...

Stock were 4x6 and I had replaced them 3 years ago and then last week I went and bought 6.5in speakers and they fit and they sound a lot better then the 4x6

Posted: Tue, 03/29/2011 - 4:02pm

Mike, can you post the type of speaker and the model that you installed? That would be an awesome help. Also, did you get them installed at a shop or do them yourself?

Ah man I I just put my door panel back on yesterday after leaving them off for the past week when I installed these. :P I'll pull them back off and take a picture of them if you want. I installed the speakers myself it was easy only thing you had to do though is to drill out a hole in the door so that you can mount the new speaker because the holes dont line up and I suggest you get some dynamat too it helps a lot. Also make sure when getting 6.5 speakers that the magnets in the back is not too big because that would get in the way of your window going up and down. These are the speakers that I got http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/product_details.asp?item_id=112885 but there are probably other speakers out there that actually might just plop into place without needing to drill out new holes to mount them.

Mean while back at the ranch.... I couldn't have rusty hats ruining all my hard work. I used some high heat black paint. This really cleaned em up!IMG_1096-640x480.jpgIMG_1098-640x480.jpg The spray can said that the paint needed to cure at 600 Deg F I scratched my head about this annnd then BINGO! BBQ Rotors! I did put a Pan under them to dissipate the direct heat and bake instead of warp my freebie rotors from LYNX.. thnx bud!

I also decided some actual performance mods were in order while the car was bound to the shop... I read a ton of reviews on this EBAY GOD SPEED radiator.. $150 shipped to my US po Box and when I declared it at the border the guard let me go... so for a hundred and a half Im super happy...IMG_1100-640x480.jpgIMG_1109-640x480.jpgI got 2 10"Electric fans,, kind of wish they were black now... but what ever
I have run this setup spiritedly street driving since the installation and I'm really impressed gauge barley gets to 1/4! The car almost Runs to cool.

For those interested The rad is for a 180 SX and fits like OEM!

Paint now complete! I took the car for a much needed 3" exhaust.. Initially I bought pieces to fit the factory location but forgot my home made down pipe screwed up the factory fitment, so a custom turbo to tail exhaust was in order,,, flows very well :) and sounds greatexhast1_1280.jpgIMG_1123-640x480.jpgIMG_1128.jpgN1 styly 2JZno SH%T! supra angle which I really likeIMG_1127.jpg came out nice and flush the guy who fabbed it up Goes by "Muffler Guy" and he does this out of his home... some awesome work comes from his place,, super happy... all custom Mandrel bends from TOM at Ontario Mandrell nothing off the shelf but SS tube flanges and hangers,, with a vibrant Can at the end... also a custom test pipe was provided for "track days" If you notice there's a cat up front ;)
