God I know.. it's getting ridiculous - I'll look at updating the captcha to prevent these bastards from signing up..

if captcha updates dont work

given theres a new mod, perhaps you could consider manual approval of registrations, if the # of new regs per day isnt too overwhelming

Well, the captcha updates obviously did not work, as there were several new spam posts this morning.. sigh*

I did think about manual user registration, and our numbers are not that great as to make it an overwhelming task - my only question is how would a mod know if a user is a spammer or not? Plus these days most people expect immediate account creation and some might be driven away by a longer wait.

I definitely have to do something because it's starting to get out of hand. It's weird because the site ran along fine for years but in the last several months the spam seems to have increased tenfold.

For anyone interested, I think my next attempt will be with the 'Mollom' module (http://drupal.org/project/mollom), which might have better success then captcha alone.

yeah try adding a couple antispam modules and hopefully that will help

as far as manual confirmation,

easiest way would be to require registrants to answer a question in a short sentence or two.  something like "why do you want to join canadagtir" or whatever

constant spam will drive more ppl away than having to wait an extra day to reg =)
