GTIR owners chime in!

with summer soon approaching, i just wanted to ask if anyone has taken their GTI-R on a long road trip?. How did it go?, would you do it again?. Ive taken mine on a few 300-500 km runs. i dont know if it is just my car, but i found the cabin gets fairly hot after a few hours; the heat just radiates from the floor pans.

I took mine to kelowna from Edmonton (and back) 900x2 kms no issue
and the next week Edmonton to van and back through Calgary to Edmonton. 2900kms no issue
Definatly doing it again. So glad it's been reliable :)

maybe exahust leak for the hot floors..?

I've taken mine up island and back down and a couple other long drives. Only thing I can't stand is the road noise and exhaust noise.

i've got heat wrap from downpipe to just before the rear wheels.. made a world of difference for me :)

I took mine on a 1000 km round trip roadtrip last summer, handled it like it was nothing. Great car for camping if u ask me. I am definitely planning on doing it again this summer, only real problem with these cars is it only fits 2 ppl + equipment (as do most cars...). O also I cant use my rearview mirror too well when the car is loaded up.

Yo does anyone have an r with over 200 000k on the clocks?

I got 155000

i dont do long trip whit my cars cause it's not fuel efficient ..
500 km of road is 1 and a half fuel tank ..

When i brought my car home from calgary i liked that trip. The car was just ridiculously good on gas at that time. Following another car the whole way it got nearly 600 on one tank. But don't expect that to happen cuz it wont :P I would love taking a roadtrip in this car if it was just you and one other person, preferably a good looking female. Not in the dead of summer though, it would probably just get baking hot.

I take mine on several hundred mile trips every weekend, sometimes across a few states. I think I agree with everyone in the sense that it's kind of loud, and if you've got decent suspension (tien,etc..) It may get a lil bumpy, so while you might love enjoying a peripheral view of the lady friend, she may get annoyed or uncomfortable after awhile. I second what nick said, heat wrap the exhaust, it cuts down heat immensely, and If you ever get a chance (if weight doesn't matter) dynamat your car, it cuts down the road noise alot and makes long distance trips much more enjoyable.

Kills two birds with one stone! :) that would keep the speed up of the gases by maintaining exhaust heat too. Great idea.

I imagine the location of the catalytic converter might have a lot to do with the heat radiating upwards.

I don't notice the heat radiation from the floor after travelling at highway speeds or under a bit of load a whole lot myself. I'm unsure if it might be as the gases expand and cool so much directly behind the converter with the larger dia. kakimota exhaust or because the underpan cover is gone at the front end.
The car is very reliable for me on long trips so far; the a/c works good. While a bit choppy for cruising compared to longer wheelbase, like said previous i'd take it anywhere.

its worse when u go to all stainless, including a stainless test pipe.  thinner walls.  try the wrap... i'd recommend the dei titanium stuff as u don't need to wet it to wrap, and don't need to spray the sealant.  the regular shit with spray reeks for weeks till its totally gone.

i used some thermotec brand wrap with the spray on a few vehicles in the past. I sprayed the sealant on the whole roll first both sides on the floor laid out and let it dry several days, then wrapping it wearing gloves. The vapours are a little less on startup that way but mostly it is to avoid overspray. On a low resonator on a full race rally pinto we wrapped the fabric itself with mesh, wire and clamps to protect the fabric from rocks and abrasion.
One other place not on the exhaust i should wrap also is at the fmic outlet pipe proximal to the exhaust manifold on my setup where the parts are close.

I heard it was bad the heat wrap the exhaust up cause it can cause cracking due to water getting soaked up in it. I had my downpipe wrapped up in header wrap too halfway down the car but then bottoming out one too many times ripped the header wrap and no longer have anymore.

I've had mine wrapped for a few years now and the only problem I've had is the heat wrap wearing away from bottoming out. Other than that, the better you can hold in the heat, the less chance you have for cracking. The guys who start their car, and rip on it right away end up cracking stuff more easily(from the rapid heat transfer.) But heat wrap does help hold it all in and prevent cool air from contacting your exhaust/manifold/header,etc...at least from my own personal experience

A little update.... I just went from Montreal to Guelph and back over the weekend and the r loved it! The trip is about 630km (500ish highway) each way. I tried to keep track of the fuel mileage on the trip (why not!) and I tried to average about 115 km/h on the 401 (I would normally drive slower but I was in a rush... also everyone was passing me, even when i was at 120 or 125)

With some stop and go traffic coming back through Toronto, the car got ~9.0 L/100km on the trip! So either my odometer is wrong (hope not) or that is some great mileage and some saved cash.

And to go along with that, I ticked over 200 000 km on the trip! Sick!... I was half expecting something to blow up right before that milestone. I think that was the only thing keeping me up for most of the ride there.
man the 401 is boring... I dont know how ppl do it without having a little boost to play around with.

O and about the floor pans: I didn't really notice excess heat, but it wasn't too hot outside and I was cruising with a window cracked open at times to keep me awake...

K, so now I really have to ask: Does my r have the most miles on it in Canada?? I doubt it but you never know... Its definitely not the greatest selling point, but I assume the miles on the car are 100% legit.
haha I'd love to see someone with an r with like 350k on it and still running strong... damn that'd be sweet
