Gas milage
I am just wondering how much do these cars waste? i just got mine and filled it up which was about 50 liters, i drove really nice (before 3000 rpm and not flooring it) for 80 kms and now my needle shows 1 quarter down...is that normal? does anyone know l/100km? average...or mpg? if you guys think there is something wrong, what could it be?

thats what mine shows too after anywhere from 50kms. to 80 or 90 kms.

That always happens with mine, depending on how you drive a little bit, mine could be on at 50 when im at a quarter. The first quarter drains faster than the rest though. You should be able to get around 300 km on a tanks city driving. unless its winter, then like 240-250 is what i found.
yea ive been actually getting closer to 400 these past weeks... mainly city driving, some hiway (but i stay at exactly 100)
either way im getting a 94 civic for daily comute... i just came from niagra falls with a friend in his civic there and back with less than a quarter... thats about 200kms!! maybe more!LESS THAN A QUARTER TANK OF REGULAR GAS!!! i would used up more than half a tank of PREMIUM!!
lol so its a thirsty little one...
yea I had to dailly drive mine to work for a week while my focus was broken OMG!
If I didn't have a long commute (1.5hrs total) Id drive it to work.
Mine isn't bigger than yours.. I just like to drive
i daily drive mine, to and from work, about 30km's a day. i average about 13-14L per 100 in the city. On the highway, I get about 10L per 100km. I rarely run my tank below a 1/4 tank, so i fill on average about 40L and squeeze out about 300km's out of that. Considering how short my drive is, my car is barely warm and the diff fluids are barely warm, so my mileage won't be that great on short trips.
i actually filled it up and did the calculations for the 80 kms and it did 12.2l/100kms...which was not bad but then the past two days its been really warm outside and with the same quarter of the tank i did 100 kms..and drove it harder...so i think the weather affects it quite a lot if you have short drives, so like you said it needs to warm up properly

x2.
Driving my R harder or lighter makes only about a 10-20km difference per tank, unless of course I've got the gas to the floor the entire tank, which has happened. :p It almost seems like I get worse gas mileage shifting below 3000 rpms (slightly bogging the motor on each up-shift makes me put more pedal into each subsequent gear). I find shifting around the 3700-mark is best for avoiding the "bog".
The mileage definitely declines as it gets colder out.
Ty
All go, no show
what gear sets do you guys have? what are you guys reving out to at 100km/hr in 5th gear?
Mine isn't bigger than yours.. I just like to drive
i rev at about 3000rpm @ 100kmph
same, at 3000rpm I'm a little over 100 km/h. And for highway my car does about 9.5-10 L/100km, stock car.
havent really tested that. for some reason i just notice that going 60 in 3rd im at 3000 exactly, and going 80 in 4th is also 3000 exactly. i just use these numbers to know when to shift. To go along with what Ty said, i've also noticed that, and kind of wondered about it. Does that actually help gas mileage, to let your rpms climb more before shifting out, so the car doesnt have to work so hard in the next gear? very interesting, oh and ya im gunna try to not go past like 105 when im on the highways now, 120 sucks gas something fierce.
ya man, if you do your cruising at 105 then your mileage is loads better
i did 250kms yesterday and from a full to the cap tank I have only 1/8th left. Winter condition from vancouver to whistler and back, going from 90kmh to 150kmh stomping it. I also have just rebuilt my turbo which hav seem to help a lot with gas mileage.
Overall I can guess 300km per tank driven hard and in mountain roads with lots of hills. Not too bad I guess.
i did 370km's on a 44L fill from vancouver to whistler with 110km's in the city. i kept a constant 120 the whole way on winter tires
I was on winter tires too and we were two full size adults with snowboard and gears and full size jack and tool box in the trunk, I think I could manage 370km also if I didnt hit the gas pedal so hard and wasnt so loaded with extra weight.
the absolute best I've gotten was 510 kms on a full tank of fuel. That was exclusively highway driving in saskatchewan with little to no hills or stops/city driving.
Most times though, its in the high 200's, low 300's. Lucky to ever get above 400 in the city.
It will be interesting to put the data cable on and monitor the values though to see if everything is working right.

510 is impressive, the most i've managed i think was like 465 but i think i could have eeked it out to 490. this was on the way down to seattle with traffic jams and a consant 120 in 40 degree heat.
Over the last 250 km driving I got 10.9L/100 km with my GTIR mostly in light to moderate city traffic with a bit of ring road cruising mixed in.
Used Mohawk 94 [10%] ethanol blend and driving style was mostly with a mind towards economy vs. letting it rev out a lot. No octane booster was added this time.
It's claimed you will get better fuel economy with Petro Canada refinery and derived fuels [Hughes,Mohawk, Husky etc] vs. Shell or Esso blends.
The latter have more power due to higher relative percentage of aromatics and energy associated with breaking the cyclical bond, but the former's higher percentage of open chain alkanes let O2 get to the HC bonds easier in a spatial way with somewhat better combustion efficiency.

the beauty of not having hills and no real traffic.. try vancouver's stop n go traffic and watch that fuel gauge become a g meter.
i spend more time stopped than actually driving. i could never squeeze out 11L/100 in the city even if i tried.
.. for sure, my economy style cruising test was off peak hours and with steady flow for the most part avoiding stop and go when possible; i was more trying to almost coast all the time vs. stop/start like commuting.
I recall huge traffic density in and around Van when visiting Indy a few times some years ago; Wow!, I don't imagine the congestion's improved much nor has the cost of fuel. The scenery and challenging roads were a gas.
By way of mileage comparison, my aprox 900kg toyota sera [paseo] 1500cc auto fwd gets about 6.8L/100km at highway speeds on the flat to Sask.

avg price in van for 94 oct is 1.19 - 1.25 and traffic well has grown exponentially since the last indy :D
mohawk 94's currently around $1.04/L , or about $1.20/L with octane booster added

does octane booster help? to me it seems like a little scam of theirs to buy their crap..
today filled with 33 litres and made 214 kms to the tank. somebody care to do the math? damn the cold prairie weather and having to warm up the car. bugger.
Nick, where's your tune up list!?
RNN14
Your point on the octane booster is well taken. I think it works for me not so much for greater performance but greater protection from pre-ignition knock on hard accel. Not faster but maybe smoother. No doubt it's marked up like sugar water drinks and marketed just as hard.
Lately I've been using NOS brand [for racing use only! lol] because it fits where the japanese road flare normally sits, :) also i buy STP occasionally which seems to be all over and is cheap here. Adds fifteen cents or so per litre on a tankful and is mostly just for peace of mind i must admit.
Top Gear tv journalists as seen in the link below had rigorous scientific testing performed on several variously priced octane boosters.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1184072408751432237#
The results show for all four octane booster products tested an actual _reduction_ of power, -2% power, across the rpm band. The STP brand actually has a 6% reduction in HP under wide open throttle. WOT!

re: mileage, i recently got 10.2 L/100km @ 100 kph highway cruising in -15C conditions on a long almost unbroken run to PA with my new x-ice tires and a good wheel alignment. Haven't been driving around town alot recently so didn't check city mileage lately but likely way up there around 15+ L/100km too .

i get right around the same highway which i think is not too bad but it really sucks on short drives
why drive any car.... drive your dream car!
pretty sure you don't need octane booster, the car runs pig rich. if you're that concerned i'd back off 2deg's of timing rather than cough up 10$ every fill up for octane booster. you'll be pretty safe up to 15psi on the stock turbo with an upgraded fuel pump. i beat the living shit out of the car on 94 and i don't have any detonation on 94oct, in fact no issue with 92 either
if its that cold out there, and you barely get the oil temps to 70 degrees before u shut her off, i'd go with a 0w30 or 5w30 oil. but as soon as it warms out, i'd drain it out and go to a 0w40 or 5w40. i'd also consider using heat range 6 plugs if its really that cold too.
OK I'm kind of sick of this thread.. my god If you wanted fuel economy then your in the wrong car.. If this is your only car than your in the wrong car! if you Cruise around and have fun, race on weekends and DD something else.. your in the right car!
just my opinion.
Mine isn't bigger than yours.. I just like to drive
i was not complaining about how much my car wastes i was just asking if its normal. this is my only car and i think im in the right car still..stop being a smartass!
you can improve the fuel consumption, but it would require a piggy back, nistune, or standalone to lean it out in certain areas.
Its my only car too, but i couldnt care less what the fuel economy is, i knew going into it that it would be horrible. But you still can't beat wiping the grins off the faces of guys in civics.. thats why i bought my gti-r.
thats the best reason lol.
why drive any car.... drive your dream car!
for sure, first saw my car at an ice dice, great fun winter car!
i check mileage time to time to see if in tune
