just spins , no catch or anything . really odd

it could also be your flywheel. try putting the car in gear and rock it a little so the flywheel moves to a different position...

The gear in your starter needs to slide onto the flywheel while spinning. The turning and the sliding of the gear are actually different mechanisms while being in the same part. If you can get underneath and tap a few times without beating the hell out of it, sometimes it will loosen the junk inside of it. If it does engage after that, you might be able to pull your starter and clean the innards enough make it reliable again. If it doesn't engage still, then it could very well be what evo3 said.

I pulled your starter out Saturday morning. The starter bench tested good. When installed in car and starter bolts tight, the starter spins, but dosen't engage flywheel. When installed in car with bolts loosened off a couple threads, starter engages, and turns engine over. Why this happens, I don't know. Someone else just did the motor swap in this car, and starter hasn't worked since. Any help would be appreciated, as I really don't want to have to pull the engine, or transmission from this vehicle, the owner has already spent alot of money on this car.

I know a lot of starters need shims to align them,,, the fact that you loosened the starter bolts says there's an alignment issue

I second the alignment issues. I'm a newbie myself but could there b a flywheel spacer or maybe it's the wrong starter motor as u stated that it has had starting issues before u. I had helped a friend do a auto to 5 spd swap into a 1972 Datsun 510 and we had starter issues also which we forgot to take off the flexplate spacer which changed the distance the starter engaged the flywheel, we ended up putting washers to get the alignment back where it needs to be. If it was me I would verify that the starter is the right one and if it is just use spacers to fix the alignment issues. Let us know what u find

? any possible differences in nissan bluebird sr motor's flywheel or starter vs. gtir red top sr20?
as seen in pics at http://www.canadagtir.com/forums/canada-gtir/members-cars/my-bluebird-srd-gtir
Does the remachined flywheel change things?

I got my gtir flywheel remachined and redrilled to fit my new clutch . I have no idea as to what or how the other mechanic put it in for me , but I re did all the tranny/clutch stuff . 4xtoys said that my starter worked when unthreaded about 2 threads so I went to a machine shop and got them to make me up a nice legit shim for it , hopefully it works .

""I remember seeing a comparison between a DE flywheel and a GTIR flywheel, and the GTIR was bigger.

Also, it you want to fit a DE flywheel on a GTIR block you need to drill the holes 0,02" bigger.""
i think my old mechanic did not follow this and just threw on the matching flywheel with my new sr20 clutch (not using my old gtir flywheel and redrilling it) . making it so that it wont catch like it could before i did the motor swap . clearly when my new mechanic loosens the screws .. it grabs . cause the flywheels too small, cause about 2 months ago ... i started up that car ... and it definetly started and grabbed nicely . makes sense guys right?

Sounds reasonable. In addition to the G20 forum nov '02 quote above, the SR20 community forum is very recently discussing almost the same thing but possibly from the other direction here: http://www.sr20-forum.com/vvl/24909-gti-r-flywheel-sr20ve.html
The sr20 poster may have a gtir flywheel still for sale [thread and post only from last week, and he wanted around $120usd with no takers.] He might be looking for a smaller unit for a sr20ve.
Best success with the spacer solution to make it fit & i hope you're on the road soon!
