BIG Brake Group Buy

HI everyone.
After the very succesful downpipe GB, I think some of us are ready to shop for brakes !

I've contacted Brian at FastBrakes and he will provide the following options for GTI-R owners.

I'm no brake guru, so please search around and look at the Wilwood catalogue for specs and details.

Nice... I have had kit A for a couple years now. Works well and fits under a lot of 15" wheels will not fit under oem wheel. The 2 piece rotors are 2lbs lighter than a single piece.

Thanks for the info... good to know because I have 15" and not planning on changing soon. Big Brakes are essential in my opinion on these cars! I'm boosting 16psi on stock turbo and the only thing lacking right now on the track is the OEM brake set-up!

IM IN!

sounds good

the only wilwood component is the caliper. the rest is pieced together, with a custom machined dogbone for mounting the caliper.

is this still happening?

consider master cylinder as well. I did a wilwood kit on a Jetta that I stuck a Corrado G60 motor into... the brake were phenomenal but the stroke on the pedal went longer because the same master cylinder had to move 4 pistons per front wheel as opposed to just 1 per wheel... not sure what would x-ref as a part but maybe something from a 300z or Skyline... space is limited though.

^^^ are you sure the Pulsar needs a M/C upgrade with this kit ? I'm sorry to say, but you can't just state "I've done it on car X with Wilwood kit Y and it needed a M/C upgrade"... see what I mean ? Thx --McDave

You don't need an mc upgrade with this. Besides the biggest you can get in an oem fit is a 1" from the 15/16 inch. I've had my wilwood big brake kit for nearly 2 years. Pedal travel increased a tiny bit, big deal. Get on the brakes hard and you'll have your passenger missing the dashboard by an inch. This has been experienced by my bestfriend.

Looks like the MC upgrade has been "considered" and not needed then... ;-)

Come on guys! We need 10 kits to get this amazing deal!!!!! BIG BRAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted: Mon, 02/22/2010 - 2:00pm

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but does anyone know where I can get a hold of a big brake kit. I've had my car for almost 2 years now before I didn't know how shotty the brakes were until I started doing power mods thinking the brakes were good enough but they definately aren't.

I just bought a pulsar is there a way i can get one of these ??????

Posted: Wed, 03/24/2010 - 3:41pm

The group buy is long gone but you can always get in touch with Brian at Fastbrakes.com (awesome guy to deal with and very professional).

Any B13 kits will fit the pulsar.

This is the cheapest kit and works wonders for most of us who autocross and track our cars

This is what comes with the kit minus the Hawk brake pads

Posted: Thu, 12/16/2010 - 9:55am

Call fast brakes... they might be able to hook you up.. honestly I would considder the 11.75 kit... If oyu ever need to replace a rotor there only $31 ea!  thats cheaper than most oem replacements!

what size rims do you need for those kits?

Posted: Thu, 12/16/2010 - 4:45pm

11" kit will fit under 15's as its what i use, im also super cheap and not willing to pay for 16" or larger tires

11.75" kit will only fit under a handful of 15's like the te37 or team dynamics pro race2's with massive brake clearance (im also super cheap and not willing to cough out for te37's else i woulda gone to these brakes), or massive spacers and enough inner wheel diameter by the spokes and caliper.
else assume the 11.75" kit will fit under 16's, except for possibly the enkei rpf1's which have ridiculously small inner wheel clearance

u should email brian g at fastbrakes for the dimensions, i believe for the 11.75 kit you need 13.25 clearance by the spokes and like 1 inch from hubface to spokes, don't quote me on that, just ask him he has exact measurements.

Posted: Thu, 12/16/2010 - 6:30pm

Well, I've got a slew of 14" rims that I run all my winters on...so I don't think I'll be wanting to swap brakes every time I winterize the car.

I run 15x8 XXR 513s in the summer, so I could only fit the 11" kit anyway. There is no way I'm going for bigger rims than that, I'll be really running out of tire past 16s on this little car haha.

Posted: Thu, 12/16/2010 - 8:40pm

Team dynamics are awesome rims and there very reasonable,,, Pro Race 1.3's are $138 each... the pro race 1.3 15x7's are also the SPEC miata wheels which makes them easy to get aswell. probably the cheapest sub 15lb wheel

What is the word on using an adjustable or different proportioning valve when running big brakes.

There is already a valve doing this. It does control in "X" so if you have a brake failure, say front right, then the other "segment" will still respond (front left + rear right).

I thought of doing this but I think 2 valves will be hard to tune... I would rather increase the braking in the rear !

But if the front brakes arent on a seperate circuit from the rear then will installing different brakes on the front change the front to back bias?

so long as the piston area is not a whole lot different between the two calipers u will be ok

In all honesty, it does change the bias a little... The front does dive under hard braking, I think we need a rear upgrade to bring the balance (to the Force? lol) back.

I was tempted at some point by a kit from a guy in the UK (gtiroc) but I would rather source some rotors and hats locally (in North America at least)... If anyone has a shop to manufacture the bracket, then we could come up with something interesting. Just a thought.

I agree. I am reluctant to upgrade the front brakes if it is going to disturb the balance (of the force muah).

Front brake upgrade was the best money ive ever spent on this car. the OE brakes are dangerous. The only balance the OE setup has is that both front and rear brakes suck; with the BBK at least the front's wont suck
